Navigating NBA Arena Bag Policies: Your Ultimate Guide

Heading to a game and wondering what bag you can carry through the door? Unlike the NFL bag rules, the NBA does not run one league-wide bag rule. Every franchise sets its own limits for its home arena, so a bag that sails through security in Dallas might get turned away in Boston. The differences usually come down to two things: how big a bag is allowed, and whether it has to be clear.

What You Can Bring

  • Small Bags (most common rule): The majority of NBA arenas cap non-clear bags somewhere between roughly 4" x 6" x 1.5" and 14" x 14" x 6", depending on the building. Purses, clutches, and small totes that fall within an arena's posted limit are typically fine.
  • Backpacks: Almost universally prohibited. Only a small handful of arenas make exceptions, and even then usually only for medical or parenting bags.
  • Clear Bags: A minority of arenas — including FedExForum (Grizzlies) and Smoothie King Center (Pelicans) — specifically require or prioritize clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags. Most other arenas will accept a small non-clear bag as long as it's within size.
  • Medical and Diaper Bags: Nearly every arena makes an exception for medically necessary items and diaper bags, though they're usually still subject to inspection.

Important Considerations

Because there's no standardized NBA maximum, "small enough for one arena" doesn't guarantee "small enough for another." Some venues, like TD Garden (Celtics) and Fiserv Forum (Bucks), only allow a wallet-sized clutch — no more than about 4" x 6". Others, like Chase Center (Warriors) and State Farm Arena (Hawks), allow bags up to the NBA's more generous 14" x 14" x 6" ceiling. All bags, regardless of size, are subject to search or X-ray screening at entry.

Stay Informed

Arena bag rules are adjusted more often than league-wide policies, sometimes with little notice — TD Garden's 2024 switch to a strict 6" x 4" x 1.5" clutch-only rule is a good example. Always check the specific arena page for the team you're seeing before you pack your bag.

*Indicates the arena only allows a small clutch/wristlet-style bag (roughly 4" x 6" and under) rather than the NBA's larger 14" x 14" x 6" ceiling. Always confirm current dimensions on the official page before you go, since arenas update these rules without much notice.
